GLAND PACKING
What Is Gland Packing?
Gland Packing, also known as Compression Packing, Mechanical Packing, Braided Packing, or Packing Rope, is a sealing material used to prevent leakage between moving and stationary components in industrial equipment.
It is manufactured by braiding high-performance fibers such as Graphite, PTFE, Aramid, Carbon, Ceramic, Cotton, Glass Fiber, and Synthetic Fibers into square or rectangular cross-sections. Additional lubricants, blocking agents, and surface treatments may be applied to improve sealing performance, reduce friction, minimize leakage, and enhance heat dissipation.
During installation, packing rings are inserted into the stuffing box and compressed using a gland follower, creating radial sealing pressure against rotating shafts or valve stems.
Gland Packing is widely used in industries requiring reliable sealing under high temperature, pressure, chemical exposure, and mechanical movement.
HOW GLAND PACKING WORKS
When axial force is applied through the gland follower:
- The packing compresses axially
- Expansion occurs radially
- A sealing interface forms between the shaft/stem and housing
- Leakage is controlled while allowing movement
This sealing mechanism provides a balance between sealing efficiency and equipment operability.
